Alert: 06/02/2007
It’s
eight days and counting!
We know that
everyone is engaged in last minute organising for the journey. But
now’s the time to be organising to ensure you get the maximum
local media coverage for your contribution to the convoy.
We are organising
national and international media centrally – but if you have
any contacts please do email them to Kevin.ovenden@gmail.com
As you can
see from below it is possible to get extremely extensive and favourable
local media coverage. The story of someone from a local community
heading off on such a long and worthy journey is made for the local
media.
Here’s
how to get coverage.
1) Get hold of the details of all the local media: papers, television
and radio.
2) Phone, ask
for the news desk and ask to speak to an editor or journalist. Tell
them who you are and what you are planning to do.
3) Give them
important facts – how much aid has been collected in the area,
how it’s been collected (mention any community or trade union
organisations), who you are, who’s going – mention interesting
points like any personal connections you might have with the area,
and skills you are bringing to the convoy, etc. Say what has motivated
you. Tell them you are travelling 5,000 miles.
4) Tell them
when you are leaving for London and give them a contact number.
Tell them when you available to be interviewed. Offer for them to
interview you beside your decorated vehicle or amidst loads of aid
material – some picture or film footage that will look really
good.
5) See if any
well known figures from your town/city will join you on your send
off. Any MP or councillor who TRULY support Palestine. Any sporting
figures or local celebrities.
6) If possible
try to get a story in now, with details of how people can donate,
and then another one on the day you head off. You can give the local
media updates en route as well.
7) If you have
support from the local Stop the War Coalition or from experienced
campaigners they will have done media work and will be able to advise
you.
8) Remember,
what you are doing is of great interest – and that makes your
personal story very interesting too!
Do look at
Razwan’s story HERE
(pdf) in his local paper in Maidenhead. He’s got excellent
coverage and has had no experience of dealing with the media before.
We have every faith in you to do the same.
